The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933)

American missionary, Megan Davis comes to Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War in order to marry the missionary, Dr. Robert Strife. After being separated from him during a riot, Megan is saved by General Yen. She joins his court and grows close to his mistress, Mah-Li, begging for her life when she is discovered as a spy. General Yen, out of affection for Megan, spares Mah-Li, only to be betrayed by her in the end.
